On 26 April, 2024, CUHK(SZ) hosted its first Technology Achievement Showcase, bringing together leaders and guests from the Longgang District Science, Technology and Innovation Bureau, universities, research institutions, tech companies, as well as representatives from investment and research firms. The event highlighted the university’s research accomplishments and progress in the transformation of research and development (R&D) outcomes over its first decade, showcasing 10 tech innovations spanning areas like big data, artificial intelligence, and biomedicine.

Accelerating Collaboration Between Industry and Academia: 10 Key Projects Focusing on the Transformation of R&D Outcomes

This showcase was organized by CUHK(SZ) with support from the university’s Technology Transfer Center, Research Administration Office, and the Longgang District Science, Technology And Innovation Bureau.

CUHK(SZ) Vice-President Mr. K.C. Yuen introduced the university’s impressive achievements over its 10-year journey. He expressed hope that this event would strengthen collaboration with government and industry, and proposed establishing a regular platform for sharing innovative results. This would provide an open, cutting-edge space for communication and cooperation between academics, policymakers, and the industry. Mr. Yuen also emphasized the university’s commitment to improving its ecosystem for transforming R&D outcomes and enhancing its role in driving regional innovation. He encouraged faculty and students to actively engage in discussions, seek out partnerships, and promote the rapid advancement of R&D outcome transformation through collaboration.

Mr. Lin Yitao, Director of the Longgang District Science, Technology and Innovation Bureau, echoed these sentiments in his speech. He emphasized the government’s strong support for technological innovation and expressed hopes that the showcase would help leverage local policies and resources to identify more competitive projects. This, he noted, would enhance collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions, as well as drive deeper integration in building platforms for innovation.

China’s Listed Company Carbon Database: Measuring Over 4,000 Companies to Support the “Dual Carbon” Goals

Among the 10 showcased projects was the “China Listed Company Carbon Database and Its Application,” led by Professor Huang Jianwei, Associate Vice-President (Development), Presidential Chair Professor, Associate Director of the Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society, and Director of the Shenzhen Key Lab of Crowd Intelligence Empowered Low-Carbon Energy Networks. The project created a carbon emissions database covering over 4,000 listed companies in China, offering high-precision, multi-dimensional, and lifecycle emission data. This promotes transparency in carbon data and supports companies’ sustainable development.

“The carbon market is a very complex space. Whether it’s academia, industry, or government, we need to cultivate talent in this area to successfully build the carbon market. With the right policies and incentive mechanisms in place, everyone will be motivated to reduce carbon emissions,” said Professor Huang.

CUHK(SZ) plans to host quarterly showcases of R&D outcomes in the future, along with periodic salons focusing on specific academic disciplines, prominent scholars, and industry leaders, aimed at accelerating the effective transformation of the university’s outstanding R&D outcomes.
