Professor Douglas Robinson, a prominent scholar in Translation Studies and Head of the Division of Intercultural Communication, CUHK(SZ), visited the Department of Translation, CUHK on 12 March, 2025 to deliver the Yau Shing-yue Lecture in Translation. His presence not only strengthened the academic ties but also deepened the collaboration between the two campuses.

In his lecture, titled “The Strange Loops of Translation,” Professor Robinson suggests by contrast that sense-for-sense translation compels translators to discern the true intentions of the source author, intertwining the inner worlds of both author and translator like intimate partners. Conversely, he notes that radically stylised literal translations, including homophonic translations, create a dynamic tension between the author and translator, akin to an old married couple that often argues yet remains together out of familiarity.
