Twenty-one students from CUHK and CUHK(SZ) embarked on an 8-day Wu Zhi Qiao service-learning trip to Fujian’s Yushan Island, one of China’s Top10 Most Beautiful Islands, from 7 to 14 July, 2025. Although the trip began with a typhoon and heavy rainfall, the team was still able to fully immerse themselves in local cultural preservation. They learned traditional craftsmanship, such as net weaving and boat building, and experienced local cultural practices, including Pengpeng drum performances and wedding customs. Students documented these traditions through multimedia materials and oral history records.
The students transformed the century-old fishing village’s archives and antiques into creative exhibitions and cultural products, injecting new vitality into rural revitalisation. The initiative fostered cross-regional exchange and established a valuable platform for rural development, while allowing participants to experience the uniqueness of island culture and contribute to its conservation.
