United College, CUHK and Ling College, CUHK(SZ) co-organise Green Camp 2025

To foster friendship and communication between students of United College, CUHK and Ling College, CUHK(SZ), and to deepen their understanding of social innovation and sustainability issues in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, the two colleges jointly organised the 4-day-3-night Green Camp 2025 on 19 May, 2025. Ten students from each college participated in the Camp, which aimed to encourage in-depth discussions and reflection on related topics such as low-carbon living and ecological conservation through site visits in both cities.

The first two days of the Camp took place in Shenzhen. On the first day, students visited Ling College, CUHK, to get acquainted with one another, followed by site visits to BYD Auto Corporation and Cowarobot Corporation to learn about the current state of the new energy industry, including electric vehicles and automatic sanitation vehicles.

On the second day, students visited the Futian Mangrove Ecological Park, Shenzhen, which is located just across the river from Hong Kong’s Mai Po Nature Reserve. They then spent time at the Shenzhen Museum, gaining deeper insights into the ecosystems, historical development, and urban evolution of both cities.

The following two days were spent in Hong Kong. Under the introduction of Dr Tony Chan, College Secretary of United College, CUHK, students first toured the energy-saving and renewable energy facilities installed by the College. Then led by Professor Johnson Chan from the Department of Geography and Resource Management, they also explored the CUHK campus to learn about its natural environment and the historical development of building CUHK on a mountain. Additionally, students visited the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change, CUHK, to understand the impacts of climate change on human civilisation and the World.

Students also visited Mil Mill, Hong Kong’s only beverage carton recycling factory, and “Green@Sha Tin” Hong Kong’s first community recycling station. They learned about the roles of public and private organisations in environmental protection and recycling and participated in DIY workshops to make recycled paper aroma stones and natural toothpaste, experiencing how resources can be reused in simple ways in our daily life.

At the closing ceremony, students shared their reflections on the topics explored during the Camp. Professor Tang Sze-wing, Associate Head of United College, CUHK; Professor Tse Chi-shing, Associate Dean of Students; and Dr. Tony Chan, College Secretary, participated in the ceremony. Students presented their observations and proposed solutions for different topics, including low-carbon living, sustainable urban development, and ecological conservation. Certificates were also awarded to all participants, marking the conclusion of the 2025 Camp.
