Joint Student Orientation 2025: CUHK and CUHK(SZ) welcome new Collaborative Double Major Programme (CDMP) students

On 13-14 September, 2025, CUHK and CUHK(SZ) jointly hosted a two-day orientation programme to welcome 52 CUHK students and 71 CUHK(SZ) students from three Collaborative Double Major Programmes (CDMP):

  • Interdisciplinary Data Analytics & X Double Major Programme (IDADM)
  • Aerospace Science and Earth Informatics & X Double Major Programme (ASEIDM)
  • Materials Science and Engineering & X Double Major Programme (MSEDM) (newly launched)

Held across both campuses, the orientation provided a vibrant introduction to cross-campus learning, fostering community, collaboration, and academic curiosity.

Day 1: CUHK Campus

CUHK(SZ) students were warmly welcomed by their CUHK peers on CUHK campus. The event commenced with a welcome address by Professor Irwin K. C. King, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) of CUHK, who highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary learning and the unique opportunities offered by the double major programmes.

Students then attended parallel programme briefings, where they explored curriculum structures, research directions, and career pathways. Representatives from the Office of Co-operative Education Programme (CO-OP) and the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) also introduced key support services and resources available at CUHK.

In the afternoon, students participated in ice-breaking activities and a campus treasure hunt, encouraging interaction and exploration of the scenic CUHK campus.

Day 2: CUHK(SZ) Campus

The second day began at the CUHK(SZ) campus with a group photo at the Administration Building staircase, followed by a welcome speech from Professor Cai Xiaoqiang, Associate Vice-President (Education & CUHK Affairs). He highlighted CUHK’s academic traditions, Shenzhen’s dynamic innovation ecosystem, and the synergy created by the dual-campus model.

Programme committee members, senior students, and the CDMP Society shared their experiences of academic life, offering guidance on how to navigate the journey ahead. During parallel briefings, interactive Q&A sessions gave new students the opportunity to engage directly with faculty and senior peers, deepening their understanding of the programmes.

A convivial lunch strengthened bonds across campuses, while a lively orientation carnival filled with team games and laughter captured the energy of the day. Student-led campus tours rounded out the experience, helping newcomers feel at home in the vibrant CUHK(SZ) environment.

A Shared Beginning

By the end of the programme, students had not only been introduced to their academic pathways but had also forged friendships and a sense of belonging that will carry them through their years of study. The orientation marked the beginning of a shared journey, one that blends academic exploration with community and tradition with innovation across both CUHK and CUHK(SZ).
