On 21 March, 2026, the CUHK Campuses Collaboration Office (CCCO), in collaboration with the Walk in Hong Kong team, led a group of 2+2 CDMP students on an immersive exploration of Kowloon Walled City, one of Hong Kong’s most iconic historical districts. The activity offered students from CUHK and CUHK(SZ) a first-hand experience of Hong Kong’s local culture, community history, and vibrant street life, and fostered cross-campus exchange and deeper cultural understanding.
The tour began at Hau Wong Temple, a site closely tied to the Walled City’s origins. After a group photo, students embarked on a two-hour guided tour led by a professional guide, establishing a rich historical context for the experience.
The group then explored Kowloon Walled City Park and the former Yamen site, where the guide vividly recounted the area’s transformation—from a late-Qing fortress to a densely populated, unregulated enclave, and ultimately to the tranquil park it is today. Participants gained insight into both the architectural complexity and the social fabric of the former Walled City.
The experience was complemented by visits to local food spots, including Tak Hing Fish Ball Company and Kung Fung, where students sampled authentic Hong Kong snacks. A stop at a traditional Chaozhou grocery store offered a glimpse into everyday life before modern retail, while the tour concluded in Kowloon City’s “Little Thailand” and “Little Chaozhou” districts, showcasing stories of migration, cultural fusion, and culinary diversity.
The activity provided a well-rounded and engaging cultural experience, blending history, food, and community. Students left with a deeper appreciation of Hong Kong’s heritage, strengthened peer connections, and lasting memories of the day.
